Arrival and Dismissal

Arrival:  The safety of our students is our number one priority; especially during arrival and dismissal times.  Important routines and safeguards have been implemented to ensure that all students get to school safely and return home in a safe manner. These routines and safeguards are noted below.

Car riders will be dropped off in the upper lot of the school.  Families are asked to stay to the right of the drive, loop around to where teachers are stationed, and drop off their children.  Staff members are not allowed to assist children in getting in or out of vehicles and car seats.  Students should be prepared to exit and enter vehicles independently or with your help.  Once students have exited vehicles, they will be directed to walk along the sidewalk and enter school through the front doors.

Buses will loop around to the front of the school, bus riders will exit the buses and enter school through the front doors.

Walkers are asked to use pathways and sidewalks to maintain their safety during the journey to school.  Walkers will enter the school through the front doors.

Arrival is a busy time for everyone, with a lot of students and vehicles moving about.  We ask that families park in the lot and enter the school during arrival only out of necessity.  This will help alleviate foot traffic at the front of the school, and assists in avoiding interruptions in the established traffic patterns.

Dismissal:  Routines for school dismissal are similar to those of arrival.  Car riders will be picked up in the upper lot.  Walkers and car riders will be dismissed from school first and will exit Cushing School through the back door by the upper lot, off of the gym. Walkers will disburse along pathways and sidewalks as appropriate.  For car riders, families are asked to remain in their vehicles and loop around to where teachers are stationed.  Children will be released for pick up once each parent/caregiver has arrived in the designated area.  Staff members are not allowed to assist students into vehicles.

Bus riders will be dismissed from their classrooms once their bus has arrived at the front of Cushing School, and board their bus.

For the safety of all students, we ask that parents/caregivers refrain from parking in the lot and/or entering the building to meet their children at dismissal.  However, there will be times when lobby pick-ups may necessary. Students who are meeting parents/caregivers in the lobby will be called after buses and most car riders have disbursed.  This will ensure the safe passage for all students and families.

SPECIAL NOTE For Students Who Are Transported From School By Car:  At dismissal please refrain from parking in the Acorn Street cul-de-sac to pick up children and avoid the car rider line.  Parking and driving in this area at dismissal is causing traffic congestion in the neighborhood and creating unsafe conditions for students walking through the cul-de sac to get home.  During the summer, one of the modular units was removed increasing the space in our upper lot.  This should improve the wait time for dropping off and picking up car riders.  However, with the large number of students who are car riders, kindly note that there will always be some wait time.

We thank you for your cooperation and collaboration in keeping our students safe.
